FIRST REGIONAL TRAINING COURSE ON HARNESSING THE POTENTIAL OF THE FISHERIES SECTOR FOR SOCIOECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN THE LEAST DEVELOPED COUNTRIES

ASIA REGIONAL CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR FISHERIES DEVELOPMENT

NHA TRANG, VIET NAM, 29 OCTOBER–9 NOVEMBER 2018

The first regional training course on how to best harness the potential of the fisheries sector for socioeconomic development in the least developed countries and structurally weak, vulnerable and small economies will be held in the Asia Regional Centre of Excellence for Fisheries Development, newly established by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and Nha Trang University, in Nha Trang, Viet Nam, from 29 October to 9 November 2018. The training course will start at 9 a.m. on Monday, 29 October 2018.

Background and purpose of the training course

The training course is being held as part of a United Nations Development Account project on building the capacities of selected least developed countries to upgrade and diversify their fish exports. The course builds on the findings and recommendations of previous national, regional and interregional capacity-building workshops on fisheries sector development in the least developed countries.

The objective of the course is to allow policymakers and practitioners from the least developed countries and other developing countries to benefit from the successful experience of Viet Nam in developing its fisheries sector. The course will foster an exchange of experiences, best practices and knowledge among policymakers and experts from several of these countries to build their capacity to better harness the development potential of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.

The training course will be delivered by experts from UNCTAD and Nha Trang University in partnership with the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, the International Organization for Standardization, the Royal Tropical Institute of the Netherlands and the Marine Stewardship Council. Particular emphasis will be placed on training the participants in building the human, regulatory and institutional capacities needed for meeting international food safety standards. Participants will also be able to draw on the research capacities for fisheries sector development established at Nha Trang University.

Participation

The training course will be held at the technical level and is designed for policymakers, practitioners and experts in the fisheries sector. Nominated candidates should, therefore, possess academic qualifications, expertise and significant experience related to the fisheries sector, aquaculture, food safety regulations or fisheries sector oversight.

While the focus of the course is on the least developed countries and structurally weak, vulnerable and small economies, participants from all developing countries are welcome.

Limited funding is available to support the participation of a small number of experts from the least developed countries. Requests for funding should be explicitly indicated in the letter of nomination.

Nominated participants are responsible for obtaining adequate travel and medical insurance, as well as valid visas for travel to Viet Nam.

Background documents

An outline of the course syllabus, a questionnaire for nominated participants and the nomination guidelines are attached.
